This is the last post in the Series “What is an SEO Audit?” In the last post, you saw what might make your site load slowly. Now, we’ll get to the technical parts. What do people usually think of when they hear “SEO”? It’s usually meta-something, titles, h1 tags and a bunch of other confusing terms.
Let’s clear it up:
On Page SEO
How relevant is your page to the phrase someone typed into a search engine? That’s how you have to think about when you deal with on-page SEO.
Title Tag
This is what users see in the search engine results.
- Also the words that appear at the top of each tab in your browser.
- The title tag outlines what the page is about.
URLs
- Your page and post URLs should be short and easily readable.
Meta Descriptions
- The meta description is text that explains what users will find on the page. Search engines read the meta descriptions to determine the page’s topic and the audience that will find value.
Headings
- Your pages and blog posts should include heading tags, from the h1 which is the most important, to h2, h3, h4 etc. You should never have more than one h1 tag on any page. The Header tags are like titles on your page, outlining what the content is about.
Images
- Images have ‘alt-text’, which is text that appears before an image loads. This not only helps people know what the image is about (especially if it’s taking too long and they can’t see it), it also helps search engines know what the image is about.
Keyword Placement
You already have your keyword list – every time you create a new piece of content (the best way to do this is through a blog), you should pick a keyword to focus on. You will not only include it in the body of your content, but also in your post Title, URL, Heading, Meta Description and as ‘alt text’ in images.
The same applies to each page within your website; it should have your chosen keywords placed strategically without making content sound unnatural.
Keep watching to see these concepts in action and examples of “good SEO”!
